Your fitness is personal for Greg Crawford.
It was personal when he was an independent personal trainer working toward his dream of opening his own gym.
And now that he has done it—Crawford’s My Training Gym in Morris Township celebrated its grand opening Thursday—your fitness is still personal for Crawford.
Michele Dispoto of Stanhope said she has been working out with Crawford for 18 months, and will continue at the new gym.
“He listens,” she said.
That is important when putting your health and fitness in someone's hands, she said.
Pat Santen of Convent Station said Crawford is sensitive to how the discussion about her program and progress is handled. The smallest measure of progress is celebrated, she said.
Santen, Dispoto and their friends Emily Deso of Kearney and Gail Matthews of Morristown all said Crawford’s involvement in the community is important to them.
By way of example: Thursday’s grand opening doubled as a fundraiser for the Roots and Wings Foundation, with 25 percent of the proceeds from a raffle going to the program.
The charity, founded in 1999, helps people who are aging out of the foster-care system make the transition to their new lives; they are typically shifted into independent housing. It offers the former foster children a variety of services, including lessons about handling money, assistance getting high-school diplomas, and therapy.
“If we don’t help them now, we’ll help them by using tax dollars down the road,” Andrea Lovas, development director of the Mountain Lakes-based charity, said. Without help, they can end up homeless, jobless or in jail, she said.
Lovas said she and Crawford met at a Morris County Chamber of Commerce function (the gym is a member), and discussed ways their organizations could work together.
Crawford said his gym offers one-on-one training, or a “boot camp” style training for groups up to 12. The training is personalized to meet a client’s needs, he said.
The gym is staffed by two full-time trainers and one part-time trainer. Each offers a slightly different style, he said.
The approach is “holistic,” Crawford said.
Crawford moved to the Morristown area three years ago and began offering personal training for individuals. But the dream had always been to own his own facility.
He caters to busy professionals and busy mothers, he said.
Randy Schneider of West Orange said Crawford is “well-rounded and very educated, and has strong discipline.”
Most important, the new gym impresses Crawford’s mother, Nancy Crawford.
“I’m very proud of what he has done here,” she said. He worked for three years to make it happen, she said. “This was his big dream.”
